Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel

Tell us about the history of your castle venue?

The original house, Mount Mapas was built in 1740 by Col. John Mapas, although records show that a building or buildings stood here at a much earlier date. By 1755 it was acquired by a Captain Maunsell who was succeeded by a Colonel Loftus in 1770. During his time in residence, Colonel Loftus and his nephew converted the barren stoney soil to meadow and pasture and cut a road around the hill, his successor was Lord Clonmel who in 1790 improved the estate further spending £3,000 in the process, a handsome sum of money in the early 19th century.

The name Robert Warren is very much associated with the Castle and it was he who in 1840 enlarged the house and called it Killiney Castle. He also restored and added to the monuments on the hill, repairing the obelisk originally erected by Col. Mapas and donated land and most of the money for the building of Killiney parish church. The land on the hill - once part of the estate - was purchased from his son, Robert Warren Jnr. by Queen Victoria's jubilee memorial association and subsequently re-named Victoria Hill - as we still know it today. Its subsequent owners included a Mrs Chippendale Higgan. The trees and shrubs she planted can still be seen today and provide a decorative setting for the castle.

Killiney Castle exchanged hands again with the late Paddy and Eithne Fitzpatrick taking over the helm in the 1970s, transforming it into a first class hotel and re-naming it Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel. Today their daughter Eithne Fitzpatrick Scott-Lennon owns the hotel and together with her family continues to guide the way to its continued success, whilst maintaining the original Castle charm and Irish welcome long associated with the Castle.

Kilronan Castle

Tell us about the history of your castle venue?

Towards the end of the 17th Century the lands of Kilronan Castle belonged to Sir Thomas Baronet. This was the property which later passed into the hands of the Tennisons and ultimately the Earl of Kingston. Kilronan Castle was known as Castle Tennison. It was built in the late 1700s and replaced a house near the site of the present out offices.

The Earl had very expensive tastes and in the 1800s he embarked on the building of a gothic revival castle up against the older building.  The new part is of two stories irregular with a large baronial tower, battlemented gables and a porte-cochere joined to the building by a corridor. The stain-glass windows on the passageway depicted a variety of game birds and the Kingston Coat of Arms. However there is no evidence of this splendid work left.

Also on the grounds inside the grand entrance is the gate-keeper’s lodge. This is unique in that it was built of rockery stones and had a flat lead roof. Lighting in the castle at that time was not generated by carbide gas as was common at the time, but by oil lamps. There is said to have been 168 lamps. Looking from this avenue the castle was like a fairytale castle and still retains much of the charm.

By 1896, when the eighth Earl died, he had squandered a sizable part of the Tennison’s property. On the 3rd of February 1897 Henry the 9th Earl married Ethel Barclay Walker, the daughter of a very wealthy Liverpool brewer.  With her she brought quite an enormous dowry. They set about improving the place and the entertainment was on a lavish scale.  They often brought caterers from London for garden parties, balls and shoots.  The Earl and Countess of Kingston moved in the highest social circles of the Edwardian period.

In 1939 the contents of the castle was sold by auction and this included some priceless antiques including 300 stuffed heads and a cabinet that belonged to Napoleon. Then the Land Commission acquired the property only to sell it again in the 1950’s to two local business men. The castle was bought in habitable condition.  However, this was the beginning of the end.  The new owners had no plans for it.  To them the only importance was the surrounding land.
