Umbria

15

We spoke to Rossana Sapori from The Knot in Italy gave us the low down on everything you need to know about holding your wedding in Umbria.

Why is it the perfect destination wedding location?

Located in the centre of Italy, just in the middle between Florence and Rome, Umbria is a small little region offering romantic country landscapes with incredible view. Famous for the medieval cities surrounded by spectacular walls such as Orvieto, Assisi, Perugia, Todi and Gubbio, it is the perfect area for a boho, country chic wedding celebrations. Those couples with a small group of guests can easily find an elegant villa plunged among the green hills where to celebrate with families and friends till the early morning. Close your eyes and you can see a little small chapel on a top of a hill, with groomsmen riding vintage vespas and bridesmaids enjoying the sun and a nice gelato served on a vintage cart.  The dinner among the olive groves surrounded by fairy lights. If you can imagine you in this setting – Umbria is perfect for you.

18What’s the best time of year to go?

The best period to visit or get married in Umbria is from end of May to first week of October.  We discourage August which is also the pick of the tourist season. Should you have a tight budget, we invite you to consider other periods.

19How do I get there?

Closer airports are Rome (one hour journey) and Perugia (regional airport).

How much will it cost?

As we do offer tailored design and coordination services and not standard packages, it is quite hard to give a price for a wedding in Umbria. We always recommend couples to prepare a list of priority items and leave a little amount for contingency plans or emergency. We can confirm that this region can be also for small budgets.

16What types of venues can I get married in?

The area offers elegant resorts, romantic boutique hotels and luxury villas. In short, you’re spoiled by the choice. Probably the best choice is to rent a small boutique, quaint resort to share with a limited number of guests and spend a relaxing holiday with a wedding celebration in the middle!

14What do Brides and Grooms need to do to ensure their marriage is legally binding?

In Italy you can have civil and Catholic ceremonies. Only recently, same-sex ceremonies have gotten legal validity.  Every single nationality has different rules to follow for paperwork. Read the instructions carefully, try to respect the deadline in delivery the documents and above all check always that all your names are spelled correctly in every single document.

Should you dream of a Catholic church wedding, there’s nothing more romantic than a small tiny chapel on a top of a hill. In case of civil weddings, both Perugia and Assisi have pretty town halls, without forgetting a couple of theatres or castles where you can have a civil legally binding ceremony.

21Wedding traditions that international couples partake in?

Getting married in Umbria is a really a very romantic and unique experience. We do love all couples opting for this area as for sure there are going to have a wedding like no others. Umbria is traditionally famous for the wines and olive oil production so traditionally couples love to invite guests to enjoy a tasting tour or even take part in the cropping.

12What services you offer?

We are not a travel agency and we do not sell packages with weddings in the middle  – we have developed programs to support all those couples from the early stages of the planning to the end of the day.  Every single program offer to couples the possibility of enjoy an effortless wedding with the Italian touch.

Where do couples usually go for minimoon/honeymoon if they stay in the country?

Italy offers incredible spots from the north to the south for a minimoon. Designing and organising wedding throughout the country, we have developed a great experience and had the change of creating a portfolio of about 260 different wedding venues that can be perfect also for minimoon. We always prefer to recommend the couples to opt for areas that are totally different from those they have been for the wedding festivities. If you’re getting married among the rolling hills of Tuscany and Umbria, it is worth to have a minimoon by the sea on the coastline or Sardinia. Getting married in Capri or Ravello will mean that maybe you can move to relax  in one of the great spa/vineyards resort of Tuscany.  The important thing is to enjoy the country from north to south.

Europeans share pretty much the same traditions and I find that speeches and first dance are always the most important ones.

I also enjoy very much meeting new couples all the times, trying to understand their personality and taste in order to make their idea of a wedding a reality. A wedding is such a personal and important moment to someone’s life and I adore all the emotions related to that. sa_kosy-lounge-3What do Brides and Grooms need to do to ensure their marriage is legally binding?

Couple would need to prepare their paper work 90 days prior to their wedding date. The application would need to be filled in and officially confirmed by their local solicitor prior to submission, together with certified copies of their birth certificates and photo copies of their passports and of their witnesses. The latter must have their home town written above.

sb_gazebo_terrace_hi_1Any wedding traditions that international couples partake in?

Wedding traditions are changing and couples are getting married civilly rather than in the churches. Many international couples opt for a Maltese celebration including a Maltese Bus for their guests, combined with traditional Maltese Folk music and dancing, Maltese cuisine and wine finished with a fireworks display to mark their first dance.

sb_grotta_hi_2What services do you offer for brides and grooms getting married at either of your resorts?

Couples are taken care of from their first enquiry to the minute they walk down the aisle. Our wedding co-ordinators look after the bride and groom until their departure from the Resort/Hotel and become part of our family. We assist with planning and booking extra services to make their day extra special.

artist-impression-d-wedding-gazebo-db-san-antonio-hotelAnything important we should note?

  • Once you have decided on the date, book straight away to avoid disappointment.
  • Both Resorts/Hotels are extremely busy and accommodation is best pre-booked well in advance.
  • Should you wish to decorate the venue with a theme, plan ahead to send us the package well in advance.

Hvar, Croatia

wedding_photographer_hvar_nikola_smernic_074

We spoke to Martina Selvagi and Ivana Vukušić from Wed Our Way to get the lowdown on everything you need to know about heading to Croatia for your wedding!

restuarant-zori

Why is Hvar, Croatia the perfect destination wedding location?

When we ask our couples why they choose Croatia for their wedding destination, the answer is always the same: because of beautiful crystal sea and Mediterranean sunny climate. If you are like one of these couples and you are considering Croatia for your wedding destination, why not to have an island wedding? After all Croatia is a country of a thousand islands.

How can you pick one of a thousand? Well, many of these islands are small, not easy to get to or there are no venues on them. They are beautiful, with hidden beaches and exploring them during your stay can make your holiday escape a one-of-a-kind adventure. But when it comes to choosing island for wedding destination, one of the islands that stands out from all Croatian islands is island of Hvar, which translated from Croatian says, the Sunny Island.

Hvar is an island with most sunny days per year, but also an island of endless lavender fields, vineyards, olive trees and colourful vegetation that merges with a blue sea. It is a perfect wedding destination because at the same time you can enjoy beautiful and untouched nature, have luxury accommodation in hotels in the centre of town and choose from several just gorgeous wedding venues. You can have unforgettable wedding day, but also transform your wedding day in whole week experience for you and your guests.
st-mark

How do I get there?

Hvar is situated in central Dalmatia so the easiest way to get there is to come to Split (centre city of Dalmatia). From Split to Hvar you can take car ferry or fast ferry. There are many daily lines during the season, and easy access is also one of the reasons why Hvar is perfect wedding destination.

Car ferry goes to town of Stari Grad and drive takes 2 hours. To get to town of Hvar from Stari Grad you can take taxi or bus and drive takes 20 minutes. Fast ferry goes directly to town of Hvar and the drive takes 1 hour. There is also option to take the speed boat either from Split airport or from ferry port. This is good option if you are having wedding out of season, because at that time there are no so many ferry lines.

wedding_photographer_hvar_nikola_smernic_120

How much will it cost?

The cost of wedding on Hvar will depend on three main things: chosen venue, wedding date, and number of guests.

Most of the wedding venues in Hvar have different menu price, rental fee or minimum guest required for June and September than for July and August. Generally speaking costs for the wedding in high season will be higher than at the beginning or end of the season. But this doesn’t only enquire on costs of wedding day. Accommodation for you and your guests will be much higher in July and August.

Prices for venues ranges from:

2,370€ to 6,270€ for 30 guests

3,774€ to 6,500€ for 50 guests

5,180€ to 7,530€ for 70 guests

6,660€ to 9,110€ for up to 90 guests

These prices includes only costs for wedding venue. Other suppliers costs can vary depending on chosen suppliers and number of suppliers you are going to include in your wedding day.

wedding_photographer_hvar_nikola_smernic_084

What types of venues can I get married in Hvar?

There is a large variety of venue choices on island of Hvar, from the sea view venues, hotels, private villas to historical places. Sea view venues are most popular, because for most couples the main reason for choosing the island is to be close to the sea. One of our favourite venues is Restaurant Zori. We absolutely love Zori for several reasons:

  • It’s situated in a stunning bay on a small island across the Hvar and you can get there only by boat. Intimate atmosphere and privacy is what stands out Zori from most of the venues in Hvar
  • Zori’s surrounding is like truly peace of paradise; azure blue sea, bathed in yellow sun surrounded with colourful Mediterranean herbs. Could you imagine better backdrop for your wedding reception
  • Highly professional service and friendly, warm approach at the same time assures each guest feels welcome and as part of big family
  • Food is absolutely amazing! High quality ingredients perfectly combined in Mediterranean dishes with modern presentation transforms your wedding dinner into dining experience

When it comes to choice for ceremony venue, number one on our list is St. Mark's Church. St Mark is one of the most popular ceremony venues in Croatia, situated in the centre of the town Hvar. We love this 14th century monastery because its romantic, historic park is entrancing with its sculptures, gardens, and ambiance, provides most romantic ambience for wedding ceremony.

Other venues that are on our list of best venues are: Bonj Les Bain, Hotel Park, and Restaurant Maestral.

wedding_photographer_hvar_nikola_smernic_043

What do Brides and Grooms need to do to ensure their marriage is legally binding in Croatia?

Legal requirements can be slightly deferent depending on country that couple is coming from. But some general rules and list of documents that are required for everyone:

  • Birth certificate which is not older than 90 days on your wedding day
  • Certificate that says that couple is free to marry and there are no any legal impediment for getting married. Tuscany

6

We spoke to Rossana Sapori from The Knot in Italy to get all the details on what you need to know if you want to get married in the Italian countryside!

10

Why is Tuscany the perfect destination wedding location?

Italy is quite big and there are some areas that are not affordable for everyone; anyhow Tuscany offers spots and venues for small and huge budgets.  It is not by chance that also some celebrities have chosen Tuscany to tie the knot. If you’re dreaming a wedding in a romantic city, where you can enjoy the nightlife during your stay, we warmly recommend Florence or Siena. Those of you that would prefer a wedding in the countryside among vineyards and rolling hills can go for the Chianti area or Valdorcia. Close your eyes and imagine a ceremony in the Italian garden of a medieval castle followed by an incredible dinner in the courtyard with the light of thousands of candles and torches. Experience a show-stopping wedding cake and enjoy great wines - that’s Tuscany and Florence!

1What’s the best time of year to go?

Weather is always unpredictable, however the best period to get married in Florence is from April to mid-October. May, June & July are the pick of the wedding season – if you have a tight budget, choosing the end of September until mid-October will help you to save a little.

How do I get there?

Closest airports are Pisa (40 minutes journey to Florence), Florence (city airport), and Bologna (30 minutes journey with high speed train).

4How much will it cost?

We offer programs according to the level of support couples may need.  In any case a wedding in Tuscany depends always from what couples are realistically expecting and can afford. As we do offer tailored design and coordination services and not standard packages, it is quite hard to give a price for a wedding in Florence – we always recommend couples to prepare a list priority items and leave a little amount for contingency plans or emergency in case you’re exceeding your budget.

3What types of venues can I get married in?

The area offers flamboyant castles, elegant resorts, romantic boutique hotels and luxury villas. In short, you’re spoiled by the choice. We recommend couples to scout in depth, and before opting for the key popular venues, spend time in the area to scout around and maybe do more than one journey – do not book only on the basis of review or web sites.

2What do Brides and Grooms need to do to ensure their marriage is legally binding?

In Italy you can have civil, Catholic and as of recently, same sex ceremonies have legal validity. Every single nationality has different rules to follow for paperwork. Read the instructions carefully, try to respect the deadline in delivering the documents, and above all check always that all your names are spelled correctly in every single document.  Any tiny mistake can cause stress and delays .

9Any wedding traditions that international couples partake in?

Getting married in Tuscany can be an amazing experience and most of the couples decide to go for a traditional family style wedding meal with long tables.  They prefer to use local caterers to explore all the flavours of local foods and sometime accompanied by traditional Italian music.

What services do you offer?

We are not a travel agency and we do not sell packages with weddings in the middle  – we have developed programs to support all those couples wishing to have their wedding designed, projected and coordinated by a professional team with the Italian style.

7Where do couples usually go for minimoon/honeymoon if they stay in the country?

Italy offers incredible spots from the north to the south for a minimoon. Designing and organising wedding throughout the country we have developed a great experience and we have a portfolio of about 260 different wedding/moon venues. We always prefer to recommend the couples to opt for areas that are totally different from those they have been for the wedding festivities. If you’re getting married among the rolling hills of Tuscany and Umbria, it is worth to have a minimoon by the sea on the coastline or Sardinia. Getting married in Capri or Ravello will mean that maybe you can move to relax in one of the great spa/vineyards resorts of Tuscany. The important thing is to enjoy the country from north to south.

8Why do you love working as a wedding planner in your area?

We love designing and be creative for memorable events – never mind if it is in Tuscany or Lake Como or Sicily.  Of course Tuscany and Florence are the key popular places for destination weddings and some of our best events, even the most flamboyant for those we are well-known took place right in Florence.

Any important things to note?

We’re in the wedding planning industry from 2000 and we have developed a great experience in understanding what clients are expecting from our team.  We always try to guide you towards the planning, helping you in facing with every single aspect of the organisation following your style and personality.  You can browse our web site an go through all our wedding tips in our blog or even better download our free pocket guide with all useful information for an effortless wedding in Italy.

Ann from Lanzarote Weddings chatted to us to give us all the info you need to know before booking your wedding in Lanzarote!

Why is Lanzarote the perfect destination wedding location?

Lanzarote is well known for its all year round sunshine, only 4 hours flight time. A perfect family destination, and safe. It's also an opportunity to have a family holiday, most adults do not get to go on a sunshine holiday with all their family so a wedding here is the excellent opportunity to have everyone together. It's Euro Zone so no worries about currency exchange. The local people are very welcoming too.

What’s the best time of year to go?

As Lanzarote is a winter sun destination, more and more couples are choosing "winter weddings". November to March is very popular as most suppliers will offer some discounts. May, June and July can be a bit breezy, with September/October the most sought after months for weddings, but with all year sunshine, any month is good

Non-residents can no longer get married legally in Lanzarote so all couples MUST have a Civil Ceremony in their county of residence and bring the Civil Marriage Certificate with them.

Normally couples adhere to their own traditions. Spanish weddings usually start at 6pm for the Ceremony, 10pm for the meal and then the disco until 6am, we organise weddings for a 3pm ceremony (can be earlier or later) - depending on the chosen venue, 6pm dinner, Band and DJ from 8pm until 1am and then finish at 2am..but all this can be changed to suit the couple (depending on the venue).

We offer a full wedding planning service, everything to do with the wedding here (apart from accommodation and flights), although we can book rooms at the venue if it's a hotel as there are special room rates for wedding guests.

Why do you love working as a wedding planner in your area?

I love everything about weddings, romance... I'm a born organiser, I love helping people and to see the happy result of a year's or sometimes more work. I've been living on Lanzarote for nearly 30 years so this is now my home, I feel really proud to be helping the local economy by bringing people to experience this wonderful island.

9Anything important to note?

Since January 2016, non-residents are no longer eligible to be married legally on Lanzarote. Couples need to have a Civil Ceremony in their country of residence and bring their Marriage Certificate with them. We recommend that every visitor bring their European Health Card and also take out Holiday Insurance.
