It's a fact that some couples just do not want a big wedding and it's understandable - not everyone is a planner or a partier. An easy alternative to a big celebration is to elope, either alone or with a few close family members and friends. Where to elope is, of course, an obvious question- the world is full of wonderful places we'd only be too delirah to visit for our nuptials. When it comes to the ideal elopement destination in Europe, however, Copenhagen seems to be coming up top. It's even been described as the 'Las Vegas' of Europe. If you're planning to elope here are a few reasons why Copenhagen may be the spot for you!

1. The marriage laws

Marriage laws in Denmark are some of the simplest in Europe. While some countries require you or your partner to hold a residency for a certain period of time - there are no restrictions in Denmark. There's also very little paperwork to take care of in comparison to most European states. (A quick trip to the Danish embassy will get you all the information and documents you need before heading over).  The average waiting time between sending off your documents and receiving your wedding date confirmation is in or around three weeks. No time at all if you don't want to wait!

2. It's beautiful!

Copenhagen is a city full of beautiful, romantic spots- ideal for an elopement. Just think of all the photo-opportunities (for the 'gram obvs). The city is full of picturesque streets and a bubbling nightlife so you can celebrate your new marital status into the wee hours. The city is also home to famous landmarks such as the Little Mermaid (if you still want that fairytale element) and the Copenhagen harbour.

For the ceremony itself, couples can choose to wed at Copenhagen City Hall, a stunning, historical building full of character; one we'd happily say 'I do' in. Alternatively, throughout the summer months, the city offers open-air ceremonies in gorgeous venues such as the Tivoli Gardens or Cirkelbroen Bridge (if you dig an industrial vibe, which we do!). Note: there is a fee of 750 Krone to have an outdoor ceremony which works out at about €100.

3. Easy access

Copenhagen is super close to Ireland! If you are planning to elope but you don't have the time or money to travel too far, Denmark is the perfect happy medium. The flight time from Ireland to Denmark is less than two and a half hours, with direct flights leaving regularly from Dublin and indirect flights available from all other Irish airports. If you do find time for a mini-moon following your ceremony, Copenhagen airport operates a wide range of flights all across Europe. Maybe you could even take this as the perfect opportunity to rent a car and use Copenhagen as the starting point for the mother of all road-trips!
