Wedding Music: what to play at the Ceremony

Wedding expert Ciara Crossan’s advice is music to our ears this week as she discusses the tunes to play.

When you think about your big day, you probably imagine it as a glam mixture of flowers, smiles and music. The entire mood of a wedding is definitely projected by the selected music for the event, and choosing the best music might seem like a very difficult task, but you need to be aware of the importance of it for the big wedding day.

When it comes to the music that will be played in the church, there are more options available for you. Some churches have particular songs that every couple needs to use, but if you don’t require a religious song, it shouldn’t be a problem to include any song in the ceremony: you can choose a musical accompaniment that suits - a nice choice would be an organist.

In most cases, you’ll be able to choose the music for the wedding from your favourite songs and the best thing you can do is to choose a song that has a strong meaning to you. This way, the wedding will have a warm and intimate atmosphere for you and for your guests.

It’s very typical to have music in the background at the time the guests walk into the church. The ideal plays are the harp or the piano light arrangements. The music needs to flourish at the time the bride enters the church and this way the importance of the moment will be stressed.

Here’s a short clip of a song that I recently heard played (pretty much as you hear it now, but without the video or the cheers at the end!) at an outdoor summer wedding. The couple walked back down the aisle as a new husband and wife, with the song playing as background. It was so surprising –and yet not a dry eye was in the house! It so beautiful captured the tenderness, joy and hope of a new marriage.

Some ideas of songs to be played during the wedding ceremony are:

           Aerosmith – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,

Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion – The Prayer,

Dean Martin – Memories are Made of This,

Elton John – Can You Feel The Love Tonight,

           Enya – Only Time,

           Nat King Cole – Unforgettable

Not forgetting, the classic Richard Wagner – Bridal Chorus.

None of them tickling your fancy?! One of the most extensive websites for wedding music can be found at: http://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-songs The music clips are organized for all parts of the wedding, and from every genre.

Wedding music choices are very personal these days, with tradition being much less of a spotlight. Choose what’s right for you, to reflect the essence of this very special day.
